Koi fish in a natural swimming pond

Before you decide to have fish in your natural swim pond

All natural swimming ponds , recreational swimming holes or environmentally correct pools all have one thing in common. They will all grow algae inside the pond on all the rocks, gravel and liner. We build these style of ponds to mimic Mother Nature. We don’t use UV lights because it is not made in nature. We don’t promote using algaecides, what is natural about that. We build in a method where within a year (full growing season) that the water will take on lake type qualities and healthy to swim.

Should I have fish in my pond

My answer will always be YES. In the wild and in man made ponds with fish something magical happens. The fish eat algae and they eat it everyday. Algae should be the main food source for all natural swimming ponds and regular koi or goldfish ponds. My rule of thumb is 5 koi , 8 shubunkin or 10 goldfish per 10000 Gallons. This amount of should keep up with the algae if you are not over feeding.

Koi fish

Koi fish have a life span of 25 to 35 years old. Koi fish come in many varieties and colors as well as breeds. Some koi fish could cost as much a $1,000,000 . I don’t want any of my customers paying that kind of money on a koi fish. I recommend buying small around 5 to 6 inches. These can be bought local or you can buy them online. Many times I have lots of free koi ranging in size from 8 to 12 inches in many different colors. You just have to pay for me to catch and deliver.

Some get confused on how to say this. Sounds like (  shu·buhng·kn )These are my favorites for the beginning natural ponds. The are not expensive, kid love them and they are beautiful. Like the koi these fish are sometimes hard to tell apart. Some even have long wind blowing fins except under water. Fish don’t fly well some do just not these but it looks like they fly under water. Average life span is up to 15 years old.

Feeding your fish

These are exactly that they are gold, I mean orange. They come with a 10 year life span apart from being eaten. They mind their own business and get along will all the other types of fish. These grow to around 7 inches if they are lucky. Their normal size is around 5 inches. In clear water these are very visible because of the solid color. They can be bought and most pet stores or a local pond store. Hill country water garden is where I buy my gold fish.

Feeding your fish

Feeding your fish….. let’s start by saying it’s ok to feed your fish. This is not a fish pond though this is your natural swim pond. Your swim ponds ultimate goal is to be a clean place to swim and have fun. The more you feed the more they go #2. Our ponds do come with a filter to handle debris like this. If you are wanting to feed hand fulls of food everyday let me know so we can triple your filter size. I want you to feed your fish like you were at a park where you put in a quarter and get a small handful. throw in a few pieces here and there. Don’t make feeding a daily habit unless the filter can handle it. The fish don’t have stomachs and will keep eating. Here in central Texas stop feeding at Thanksgiving and start back after spring break.

I have many customers that need to have fish removed because of over population. Sometimes a customer doesn’t want a pond any more. All these fish are free and you will only pay for my time catching and delivering them. Some koi maybe worth $700.00 or more if bought in a store. The fish value is based on what you think it is worth.
